Tryst Press | Broadsides | The Village of Lillington

Here is the first publication of a brilliant little poem written by Leslie Norris in 1949. It was kept for years, like a shiny new coin never spent, in a gold-tooled leather-bound journal, written in Norris's elegant hand. Now it is fittingly paired in handset print with three dark starlings, the clever wood engravings of Robert Buchert. (Scroll down to read text.)

The Village of Lillington

by Leslie Norris

The village of Lillington, in its Dorset hollow,

Presents to the eye its roofs of pink

Slate, completely aware of their charming combination

With the green surrounding hills and pale

January sky.

In this village it is always Sunday.
The church, built of yellow stone,
Basks like a cat. It is only natural
That in the neighbouring farm should live
A scottish terrier.

But old enamel utensils litter the village street

And the thatch is hideous with starlings.
