The year, too young for lightning,
sends the first full rain to free
the streams, send the first night
rain to pummel muck,
release a pent-up frenzy;
newts and salamanders writhing
where the black and wet conjoin.
Before herons, before snakes,
before snow has waned to shadows,
the banks are burning.
