Aurora
by Robert Buchert

You pulled us mumbling
from three layers of heavy
wool and down.
'Hurry," you said,
hustling us over cold
stairs, thrusting us into deep
boots and clothing.
Our midnight senses staggered;
still stupid we fell
through the door
into cold so sharp
our eyes watered.
You led us shuffling on
the squeaking snow under
the pungence of dark balsam
and silent pines, then out
across the humming ice.
"Now," you said from
the middle of the bay,
"look up." Lifting
numb noses and stiff cheeks
we gaped, full waking
in the green and glory
of nature's coldest fire.

One night I will
pull a child
from dull comfort
and stand between a dancing sky
and keening earth.
