Tryst Press | Books | The First Mormon Book

The First Mormon Book: A Celebration of the 1830 Book of Mormon with an Original Leaf, designed by Victoria Hindley, was printed in 2000 by Tryst Press for Red Butte Press and Benchmark Books, both of Salt Lake City, Utah.

It contains an archivally-preserved original page from a first edition 1830 Book of Mormon, presents an essay by Mormon rare book expert Peter Crawley, and includes a foreword by Curt Bench. A single wood engraving by Robert Buchert illustrates the press upon which the original Book of Mormon was printed. The  book was letterpressed damp on handmade paper from Sicily.

The First Mormon Book was selected for the Caxton Club of Chicago exhibition: “Disbound and Dispersed: The Leaf Book Considered,” which travelled around the USA through May of 2006. Founded in 1895, the Caxton Club maintains its place in history as one of America’s foremost book organizations.
