A poem by James Whitcomb Riley. Illustrated with four woodcuts by Robert Buchert.

This book was originally dreamed up by Robert Buchert as a Christmas present for his siblings. During their formative years, Rob terrified them (as only a big brother can) with frequent dramatic recitations of Riley's poem, and exhibitions of its accompanying illustration. Rob's four woodcuts for this edition were done on oak planks, a choice reminiscent of that earlier illustration, which showed a group of children sitting around a fireplace, while behind them, in the grain of the floorboards, menacing long-fingered creatures crept.

Apparently, Rob has worked his magic yet again with this book; on receiving a copy, one brother opened it, forced a nervous smile, and quickly put it down. "The gobble-uns'll git you ef you don't watch out!" You'll love this one.
